Last week, Cardinal Pell’s conviction was overturned by Australia’s highest court in a unanimous decision, after having spent 405 days in jail following an initial ruling which had found him guilty in 2018.
Mr Kenny said despite the “understandable anger” relating to incidents involving the Catholic church in the past, “each case must stand or fall on its merits”.
He said, “it is was always curious that the allegations against Pell went as far as they did” and that the Cardinal “for much of the media … was the personification of the failings of his church”.
Mr Kenny drew reference to numerous ABC investigations aimed at the guilt of Cardinal Pell.
He said the Cardinal was subject to a “classic trial by media” which the High Court has subsequently overturned “by calmly and rationally focusing on objective facts”.
