When we confer with readers, whether in brick and mortar classrooms or distance learning platforms, our goal is to listen. When we listen, we're able to hear how readers think about their interests, how those interests relate to their reading identity. One of our goals in connecting with students through our conversations with them is to recognize the entirety of their identity as humans first, students, and readers second. Let's focus on recognizing all that students focus on. Let's recognize all that students are working on and name that back to them. When we give feedback, we focus on asset based feedback, that recognizes strengths so that students can transfer that work into future reading experiences.
