Researchers in China have discovered a new type of swine flu called G4 that they say could be capable of triggering a human pandemic. In a study published June 29, 2020, in the US science journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at Chinese universities and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found that 10.4 per cent of pork production workers may have been exposed to the new virus. But the study authors said there is no evidence yet of human-to-human transmission of the disease. US infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci said on June 30 that the new strain was not an “immediate threat”, but “something we need to keep our eye on”.*This video has been updated to correct the year of the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009.
