UK 'probably' seeing its coronavirus peak, but expect high death toll to continue: health official

Britain is likely reaching the peak of its coronavirus epidemic but it is too soon to be confident of that and begin thinking about next steps, England's Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said during a press briefing on Wednesday.

"Our view is that it is probably reaching the peak overall and that's what the flattening shows," he told reporters during the news conference. However, he said statistical lags meant the number of deaths may go up in the coming days, saying "sadly we do think high numbers of deaths will continue certainly for a short while."
