In this video you will learn about a light bulb which is continuously glowing for more than 100 years.
A light bulb in Livermore, northern California has been glowing continuously since 1901 and has almost never been switched off. It is also known as the Centennial light and also holds the Guinness book of world record because of its longevity. It also has a separate fan base and its own dedicated website. The light bulb is maintained by Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department.
The improved incandescent lamp, a handblown bulb with carbon filament, invented by Adolphe Alexandre Chaillet, was manufactured by the Shelby Electric Company in the late 1980s. According to Zylpha Bernal Beck, the bulb was donated to the Fire Department by her father, Dennis Bernal, in 1901. Bernal owned the Livermore Power and Water Company and donated the bulb to the fire station when he sold the company. The bulb was originally a 60-Watt bulb, but presently shines at 4 watt.
According to reports, the bulb has hung in at least four locations, It was first installed at the fire department hose cart house on L Street in 1901. It was then shifted to a garage in downtown Livermore used by the fire and police departments. In 1903 it was shifted to the new Station 1 on First and McLeod, and survived the renovation of the Firehouse in 1937, when it was switched off for about a week. In the first 75 years, it was connected directly to the 110 Volt city power, and not to the back-up generator for fear of a power surge. In 1976 it was moved to its present site at Fire Station 6, 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California. During the transfer, the bulb socket's cord was severed for fear that unscrewing the bulb could damage it. Electricity was cut off for only 22 minutes during the transfer, and the bulb was shifted in a specially designed box and with full Police and firetruck escort. Since that move, the bulb has run continuously on an uninterruptible power supply. The bulb’s 100th birthday was celebrated in 2001, with live music and a community barbeque.
The bulb is cared for by the Centennial Light Bulb Committee, a partnership of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, Livermore Heritage Guild, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and Sandia National Laboratories. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department plans to house and maintain the bulb for the rest of its life, regardless of length. The bulb's long life has been attributed to its low power, nearly continuous operation, and dedicated power supply.
